Thor: The Dark World ~ Movie Review

Well its been a while since Thor (Chris Hemsworth)  rocked worlds in The Avengers, reigniting a love for Marvel across the generations. Harking back to the supposedly destroyed race of Dark Elves led by Malekith, now reduced to tall tales after for eons of Asgardian civilisation. However when Jane Porter (Natalie Portman)  falls through an anomaly searching for her absent Thor, she becomes infected with the Malekith's weapon of mass destruction the 'Aether'. Cue Thor's instant return to her side with tales of planetary convergence and dark matter swallowing all the nine 9 worlds.

Yup; because it wasn't enough that he said he would see her again, his work bringing peace to 9 different planets simply didn't cut it as an excuse for not calling. Jeez it was only two years, patience is a virtue, but not to this single woman on a stalking mission. The attempt at romance felt as flat as the emotional acting towards each other, and I honestly felt as though the movie would have been better without the emphasis on their relationship. It seemed as thought they jumped at the chance to fit her out in costume.

The shameful thing being that I loved the acting by her human counter parts( Stellan Skarsgard and Kat Dennings) the humour they brought felt genuine and simply outstanding.

Thor being my favourite Marvel character (hard to argue with a God), the choice of Chris Hemsworth was a sound choice and the first film blew me away. This time around it felt like more of a filler, and his interaction with fellow Asgardians should have had more screen time. Anthony Hopkins also appeared short changed with screen time, an absolute shame. I really hope that they abandon Earth for the next adventure and concentrate on one of the many realms and myths.
Loki ( Tom Hiddleston) plays the same outstanding mischievous character, but this time we're allowed to see some true depth. Thankfully the emotions don't hang around too long, and he's back to trying to rule the universe and thwart his father and brother. It was only due to Loki's success in the Avengers that he had a part in this film, but Tom Hiddleston makes for a worthy plot line.

Malekith ( Christopher Eccleston), is the leader of the Dark Elves, a motley group long believed dead now searching for the usual magic object to take over the world. I did feel that his part wasn't fully realised, in fact the whole end of the world came secondary to the love story. A complete shame; he went through hours of make-up to hang around with characters that looked like Doctor Who extras from the 70's.

Seriously they look like freaky, not dissimilar to some of modern days children's television characters.

For a marvel film it was on a par with Spiderman; watch-able but nothing to shout about. A good solid film but more likely to amuse children. Perhaps they tried to put too much into it, but less romance more action!

Fun Facts:
Tom Hiddleston actually auditioned for the role of Thor finding out he had the part of Loki, the day after Chris Hemsworth was given Thor.
In Norse Mythology the Svartalfar are actually dwarves, the Dark Elves are from the Marvel Comics.

The picture is a fan made picture, which I found unnecessarily hilarious.
