As December gets under way,
Box of Awesome launches into its sixth box. The collectables have again made a resurgence, along with a new toy, book and a
TMNT leaflet. I'm a big enough fan to remember
Splinter's gang from the very first series, and I confess that I find the new
Nickelodeon 'concept' imagery about as visually appealing as the
TMNT movies. 'Give everything a chance and judge not, lest you be judged also.'
First up on the collectable list is a bumper pack of
Star Wars Force Attax, a collectable trading card game from
Topps Cards, with 8 normal cards and a holographic one.
There was also the standard Match Attax pack with 5 cards, 4 normal and a holographic one ( Chelsea, Everton, Crystal Palace, Swansea City, Cardiff City).
The bumper packs of Alien Attax Doctor Who trading cards, which were the 50th anniversary edition! At 9 cards a pack, it seems a pretty good deal, and there's a great variety from the older series as well as the modern favourites. I appreciated these topical inclusions because of my inner Doctor Who geek rather than any real love of trading cards.
The book in this
BOA is by
Jeff Norton and is first in the 4 part MetaWar series. First published in 2012
Fight for the Future is a brilliant mix of the very best action film, with the high tech approach of the latest online games. This world is definitely designed to appeal to even the most reluctant reader, and allows a seamless transition from reality into the world of avatars and conspiracy's and the all to realistic threat they could feasibly become in the very near future. It was a recent winner of the
Rotherham Children's Book Awards, as voted for by readers, and the last book in the series is due to be published in January 2014. A must read collection for anyone searching for escapist sci-fi fantasy, to use the most common quote (and best description), 'Alex Rider meets the Matrix'.
Also contained was a sample bag of
Skwooshi a wheat and gluten free product with similar properties to PlayDoh or Plastercine. As a parent with carpets, this has my guaranteed dislike, nothing about the product its self; simple that it shouldn't be for children. However this one claims to be mess free and will never dry out, a shame in some ways as it means that it can never be put to the side as an ornament or paperweight. The supplied sample is honestly too small to tell any thing from, but I will look into the product further, and perhaps even buy it for Xmas. Not for my household, obviously, but I'm positive my extended family would love it, in another house.
Last of all is the obligatory BOA paperwork and stickers, and the
TMNT leaflet. Well there's a
competition to win a visit from the Turtles and the Shellraiser as well as other prizes (I didn't win anything), and information on the prizes. A great marketing ploy this close to Xmas, to show you exactly what you should be buying. The website its self has links for purchasing the toys and even a link to the
Nickelodeon TMNT site for videos and games.
Still not convinced though, it's just not 'MY' Turtles any more!
