Box of OMG Review ~ Box 6

It's time for the sixth Box of OMGfrom the individuals who brought us  Box of Awesome, this box is aimed mainly at girls. In the two months since the last box arrived, they seem to have been working hard to stuff the box with goodies.
There's also a competition at the end to win this months featured book, so keep reading!

The book in the Mega Box this time is The Thirteen Treasures the first in a trilogy by Michelle Harrison. A remarkably dark book with a similar feel to the Artimis Fowl  series.  Michelle Harrison seeks to upend the sweet loving version of fairies we all know and replace them with a vicious spiteful characters. Tanya the lead character is bullied and tortured by these fairies as she tries to uncover the secrets kept from her and the world in general. The audience for this book may be intended as young teen girls, but like Harry Potter this book is a universal delight.

Much credit to the author, however my one single complaint would be the cover art. I know you don't judge a book by its cover, but the original cover was better. Re-branding it to make it fit with the perceived fashion was a mistake, and actually leads the potential reader away. It describes a light fluffy novella whereas I believe it should reflect the darkness and the magic in the story.

Also included in the box was a postcard with the cover art from the latest book The Thirteen Curses, and a little mention of a Facebook page for the series. I have enjoyed every bit of this book and fully intend to purchase the rest, regardless of my daughters opinion of it.

Next up, an extra deep rubber bracelet from Pyramid, depicting Despicable Me 2. A great piece of advertising, designed to worn by those with smaller wrists than me.

The Sampler in the box is Flora and Ulysses, a dramatic tale for younger teens (10-12) by Kate DiCamillo, author of book turned film Tale of Despereaux. A precocious young girl, victim of her parents recent divorce, her romance writing mother and a super powered squirrel that she saved from death by hoover. In the great style of Roadl Dahl or Doctor Seuss, it is a grand tale of nonsense and slight insanity.

The language is intellectual, and could have some child reading it with a dictionary in hand, but the story of searching for acceptance is simple and will draw the child in. The comic book sketches also help to make the book more acceptable to a wider age range and add a delicious quirkiness. Also included were a sheet of five stickers featuring the main characters, and some phrases.

In the box is a flyer for The Future 8 awards who, in association with the Guardian, are looking for digitally savvy children and teens to enter in a wide variety of competition categories. From blogging to animation, games to music. They are giving the chance to meet experts from your chosen catergory. You just have to be 7- 17 year olds and able to impress them. Follow on Facebook or Twitter.

Two OMG cards, two packets of HARIBO and a Swapit card with 50 points . The observant amongst you will notice that the Haribo are Easter sweets, so a little cheating going on but they are in date until next year, so even if they aren't correctly seasonal, they are still yummy!

In keeping with the pink and girly theme there are two packs of Disney Princess trading cards from Topps. Each containing six cards representing characters from Disney Princess films across the years.

Last of all the range of collectors cards and stickers from Moshi Monsters. Two packs of Moshi Monsters Mash Up trading cards with eight cards in each pack. One pack containing 5 stickers one of which was quartered into smaller ones. Also shown is the OMG leaflet detailing the new un-boxing competition and the OMG sticker.

After nearly two whole months and two subscription charges, I have to admit that I do feel as though I missed out. I only signed up for the subscription to guarantee my allocation, at the time I thought it was quite clear that it was to be a monthly box, I don't mind it being bi-monthly, but I do object to it being two payments for each box.

Now for the competition!
a Rafflecopter giveaway

Due to postage the competition is UK only, the winner will be contacted by email and has one week to respond. If there is no response after stalking by email, Facebook and Twitter, I will redraw a new winner. Good luck folks!
